Frances Fleetwood (they/them) is a queer non-binary writer, curator, producer, maker, and facilitator of artworks, exhibitions, performances, and programs, currently based in Oakland, California.
Frances works at Root Division in San Francisco, with previous jobs at Creative Growth in Oakland, Art Jewelry Forum, and Arts Project Australia and Melbourne Fashion Festival in Melbourne. From 2016-2019 they were part of the Bay Area collective Klanghaus, and hosted monthly immersive and inclusive art and performance events at various locations throughout the Bay. They are also part of Oakland collective F I L F, curating and producing an annual event of performative fashion + music collaborations.
Frances curates and produces art that creates community and includes humans, as collaborators, performers, and participants. They are currently interested in exploring performance and performativity at various interdisciplinary intersections including fashion, identity, new media, and documentation. An underlying curatorial focus to their work (which is present in most projects regardless of other varying conceptual concerns) revolves around facilitating collaboration (between artists including artists of different artistic mediums, audiences, curators, producers, and venues), and encouraging participation and autonomous engagement between audiences and artworks. They are committed to providing a platform for under-represented artists and facilitating conversations from artists who identify as women, femmes, trans, non-binary, queer, BIPOC, and disabled.
Recent projects include curating Tending Gardens / Fertile Grounds, and some past projects include producing VITAL HYBRIDS (Oakland and San Francisco); curating our selves (Oakland); co-curating and performing in an online performance document as part of Documents of The Future: invitation to edit and A Work in Progress; curating Klanghaus: Fashionhaus (Oakland); shadow sites across Centre for Contemporary Photography and National Storage Collingwood developed through Next Wave’s Emerging Curators Program at Next Wave Festival; the month long Arts Program for Melbourne Fashion Festival; and producing Tel-Aviv based performance group Public Movement‘sTraining Ground, presented as part of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art’s ACCA in the City (all Melbourne).
